17' Ash Wood Gunwale — Kerfed Outwale (Replacement Gunwale)
This is our 17' ash wood, kerfed outwale, built for strength, longevity, and compatibility across a wide range of composite canoe designs. It’s designed to be used as an outwale on composite boats up to 16'5".
The kerf cut is a small, precise lip along the inside of the gunwale. When installed, it covers and protects the edge of the composite hull and creates that classic one‑piece, solid finished look canoe builders and restorers prefer.
Sold individually. Most canoes require four gunwales (two inwales + two outwales).
We’ve standardized on the Mad River “D”‑shaped profile because it’s durable, classic, and works beautifully on most boats. But if you need your gunwales cut to a different length, or shaped to match another brand, we can probably do that for you. Just ask — we’re happy to help.
